Surrey Squash 57 Closed

18 players descended to Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club to take part in the 2017 Surrey Squash 57 Closed tournament an event which was missing from the calendar last year but will be firmly fixed for years to come.

Each of the Men’s A Grade, Over 45’s and Over 55’s events had 2 box leagues with play-off’s from each group determining the winners and final rankings.

All box matches were best of 3 games PAR scoring to 11.

Men’s A Grade

With 5 of the 6 players from the host club this was always going to be competitive battle. Mike Robinson came through without dropping a game in Group 1 whilst in Group 2 Richard North faced a match point against Michael Hennings before winning 12-10 in the third.

The final was agreed by both players to be a best of 5 encounter however Mike’s tight play proved just too much for Richard with Mike Robinson cruising to a straights sets win 11-8/11-8/11-4.

Over 45’s

This category saw the previous winner from 2015, Phil Hall (West Byfleet) and runner up Mike Wardle (Woking) both competing.  Placed in separate groups first Phil won his group after a scare in which he dropped a game against Spencer Harris (Woking).  Mike had a more comfortable route to the final without dropping a game.

Once again both players agreed to a best of 5 final and tensions were high with both players determined not to lose. There were some tough decisions to call and the first two games went very close with honours even at one game all. Phil found a new lease of energy on the third game comfortably winning it 11-4. The fourth game almost saw Mike snatch it with points at 10-8 to even the match but Phil came through with a 3-1 win 12-10/9-11/11-4/12-10.

Over 55’s

They may be held together with a few more supports but the final of the over 55’s provided the crowd with one of the best matches of the tournament.

In Group 1 Roger Monteil (Surbiton) dropped only 13 points in four games to reach the final. However Group 2 proved a much closer affair with both Surbiton’s Malcolm North and John Bainbridge opening the tournament with a lengthy game. Malcolm came through 13-11 in the third before going on to win his other game which would see him pitch in another all Surbiton final.

The match was to be played as a best of 3 game and neither player wanted to lose this. The first two games both ended 11-9 with a game each. The decider required some strong marking as fatigue started to take its toll. Roger had match points at 10-8 and again at 11-10 but Malcolm found the reserves to claim a 2-1 victory 9-11/11-9/13-11.
